COVERAGE NOTES: FEBRUARY 18

Vice President Jejomar Binay left this morning for China with guarded optimism that he can get a reprieve of the execution of 3 Filipino in China for drug trafficking.
The Vice president and his party of 4 which included DFA Usec Esteban Conejos boarded PR 358 which was scheduled to leave 715 am. Binay jokingly looked for lugaw when he was chatting with reporters.
Binay was guarded in his statements, making sure he doesn’t give anyone false hopes.
In his statement, binay thanked china for meeting him. Binay noted the trip itself, which was approved at the last minute, was a good sign. Binay is set to meet with the president of the supreme people’s court of china. Binay says the visit is a special consideration for the Philippines in view of the close friendship between the 2 countries. Binay maintained that the Philippines respects the Chinese Courts’ convictions of the Filipinos. However he says the appeal of the government stems from the belief that the 3 were victims of international drug syndicates. Binay also hopes to discuss with China how the 2 countries can curb the drug menace.
Binay also said he is hoping for a miracle.
For his part Conejos said the families of the 3 Filipinos, about 10 individuals all, will leave for China tomorrow to try to be with their convicted loved ones.
