SOLON: CATHOLIC CHURCH LOSING ITS TOUCH ON ANTI-RH DRIVE

A key proponent of the Reproductive Health Bills  indicated that the Catholic Church is losing its touch in reining in its faithful from supporting the population measure.

In a statement, House Minority Leader Edcel Lagman, who filed HB 96, said, “The most recent Pulse Asia survey revealing that 69% of Filipinos favor the passage of a reproductive health law exposes the dwindling influence of the Catholic hierarchy when it comes to persuading the faithful to eschew modern methods of family planning.”

HOUSE DELAYS OMBUDSMAN IMPEACHMENT

House Speaker Sonny Belmonte says the House of Representatives will delay action on the impeachment of Ombudsman Merceditas Guttierez.

Reached by text message, Belmonte said. “ we will await supreme court decision”

Belmonte is referring to the Supreme Court’s coming ruling on Guttierez’ petition questioning the legality of the impeachment proceedings since 2 cases were filed against her. The Constitution limits to just 1 the number of impeachment cases that maybe filed against the same official in the span of one year. The 1^st case was filed by a group led by former Akbayan party-List  Rep. Risa Hontiveros in July. The 2^nd was filed by the group of Bayan’s Renato Reyes about 2 weeks later.

The Supreme Court issued a status quo ante order, which also effectively stopped the constitutional clock mandating the House to dispose of the case within 60 days of initiation. “SC Mismo nagpigil. Sila din nagiinterpret ng law”

the committee held a hearing on September 28, where members voted to proceed. No other hearing has been set for next week.

 

 

RESIGNED DOT EXEC CONFIRMS DAUGHTER’S INVOLVEMENT IN PILIPINAS KAY GANDA

Resigned Tourism Undersecretary Vicente Romano confirmed to ABS-CBN News that his daughter Denise was involved in the launch of the Pilipinas Kay Ganda Project last November 15. Romano says he asked Denise, a director of corporate events and presentations for private companies, to handle the events direction since he wanted someone he could trust.
