House Speaker Sonny Belmonte says the House of Representatives will delay action on the impeachment of Ombudsman Merceditas Guttierez.
Reached by text message, Belmonte said. “ we will await supreme court decision”
Belmonte is referring to the Supreme Court’s coming ruling on Guttierez’ petition questioning the legality of the impeachment proceedings since 2 cases were filed against her. The Constitution limits to just 1 the number of impeachment cases that maybe filed against the same official in the span of one year. The 1st case was filed by a group led by former Akbayan party-List Rep. Risa Hontiveros in July. The 2nd was filed by the group of Bayan’s Renato Reyes about 2 weeks later.
The Supreme Court issued a status quo ante order, which also effectively stopped the constitutional clock mandating the House to dispose of the case within 60 days of initiation. “SC Mismo nagpigil. Sila din nagiinterpret ng law”
the committee held a hearing on September 28, where members voted to proceed. No other hearing has been set for next week.
